The Johnnywriter Journal: Why I Still Write

With a growing group of businesses to think about, it would be reasonable to assume writing has taken a back seat to operations, strategy and day-to-day decisions. It has not. This entry is about why writing has remained part of my life, even now.

Writing Is How I Think, Not Just How I Communicate

Long before writing became something I shared publicly, it was a way of working through my own thinking — clarifying a decision, processing a difficult period, or simply making sense of something that felt unclear in my head. That function has never gone away, regardless of how many businesses exist alongside it.

It Keeps Me Honest With Myself

Writing Slows Down Thoughts That Move Too Fast to Examine Otherwise

Some thoughts only reveal their weaknesses once forced to move at the speed of writing rather than the speed of thinking. Slowing down enough to write has repeatedly caught assumptions I would have otherwise carried forward unexamined into a decision.

It Is One of the Few Things That Belongs Entirely to Me

Every business eventually involves other people — staff, partners, customers, their needs and expectations. Writing, especially personal writing like this journal, remains one of the few parts of this work that belongs entirely to me, unfiltered by anyone else's expectations of what it should say.
