The Johnnywriter Journal: The Difference Between Looking Busy and Actually Building

It is possible to be busy every single day and still not be building anything that actually moves forward. This is one of the harder lessons I have had to learn — and relearn — while building the Hisparadise ecosystem.

Busyness Feels Productive Because It Is Measurable

Answering messages, attending meetings, reorganising a task list — these all feel like progress because they are easy to point to. The problem is that none of them necessarily move a business closer to solving the actual problem it exists to solve. Busyness is comfortable partly because it is visible, even when it is not meaningful.

Actual Building Is Often Less Visible in the Moment

The work that genuinely moves a business forward — refining a service, having a difficult but necessary conversation, thinking carefully about a decision before acting — often looks like very little is happening from the outside. It rarely produces the same immediate sense of accomplishment that busyness does.

A Question I Now Ask Myself Regularly

I have started asking a simple question at the end of demanding days: did today's activity actually move something forward, or did it simply keep me occupied? The honest answer is not always flattering, but asking the question consistently has helped me notice the difference more quickly than I used to.

Choosing Depth Over the Appearance of Effort

It is tempting to measure your own effort by how full your day looked. I am trying, instead, to measure it by whether the business is actually closer to where it needs to be. That shift — from looking busy to genuinely building — has been one of the more useful, if uncomfortable, adjustments in how I work.

Meetings Are the Easiest Way to Feel Productive Without Building Anything

A full calendar of meetings can create a strong sense of productivity while producing very little that actually moves a business forward. I have become far more selective about which meetings genuinely require my presence, versus which ones exist mainly to fill time with the appearance of collaboration.

Deep Work Requires Protecting Time Deliberately

The kind of focused work that actually builds something meaningful rarely happens by accident, in the gaps between other demands. It requires deliberately protecting blocks of time for it, treating that time with the same seriousness as any external commitment on the calendar.
